Finn Ross, the must-hire video designer at ENO this season, contributes a couple of knockout visual effects that almost compensate for the drabness of Tcherniakov’s own set designs. I’m tempted to say they’re worth the price of admission alone, but that might be pushing it.

Das Portrait recently opened at the Bregenzer Festspeil in Austria to an amazing reception from both audience and critics.

The Straubinger Tagblatt called the video "technically and dramatically captivating" while the Austrian Press Agency described our work as "magical video projections" and the Telegraph simply said "stunning lighting and video effects".

The show will transfer to Kaiserslautern in Germany in December. A selection of pictures below.

Broucek Opens at Scottish Opera

The Excursions of Mr Broucek has opened at Scottish Opera. With John Fulljames, director and Alex Lowed, designer, I made the show at Opera North last October. We have remounted it for performances in both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Gods Weep Opens

The Gods Weep, by Dennis Kelly, has opened at the Hampstead Theatre as part of the RSC's new writing season.

Ian Galloway, a long time colleague at Mesmer, and I co-designed the show.

The projection surface was a 13m wide, 5 m high concrete swoop, over which we projected many things over the three hours of the play. Our main focus was creating a living conscious on the wall looking down on the actors, acting as a subtextual expression of the undercurrents in the play.

And as much as Gramophone muddled my name and that of the movement director it is very nice to see such a traditional journal warming to the use of projection in Opera.

One of the major challenges for the show was filming two of the singers underwater, for the overture, told almost entirely in video and for the big love aria towards the ends of the first part. I spent a day at The Studio in Clapham working with my colleague at Mesmer, Dick Straker, using a Sony EX-3 in a Aquaflex housing to get the camera to where ever we wanted it to be in the tank. You can see some of the results here.

Heart of a Dog - Complicite and DNO

I will be desinging video and projection for Complicite's forth coming and first opera, The Heart of a Dog, adaped from Bulgakov's short story of the same name.

The show will open in early June at Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam. More infomration here.

MICroscope

RizMC's show MICroscope at Saddlers Wells in November was a huge success, selling out all performances with more added to meet demand. MICroscope will be doing more development work in April with a tour of the summer festivals to follow.

Mr Broucek at Opera North

Mr Broucek's Excursions to the Moon and 15th Century Prague at Opera North was a huge success. It sold out all shows and will be comeing back in March 2010 for performance in Glasgow and Edinburgh in partnership with Scottish Opera.

The video included remaking the originally moon landing, this time with a Czech flag, making a man float to the moon and fall to 15th Century Prague. It even got a mention in the Guardian review that you can read here.
